There was a strong need to control and govern the service information artifacts within the SOA Deployment. The artifacts stored and managed were also needed to be consistent.A registry-repository is like your local library.

Basically what the registry does is links the service providers and consumers.Service Registry is a place where the the consumers consume the web services which was registered by the web service providers. The Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) is a like an interface between the service consumers and providers. It provides a dynamic choice of the service provider based on the functionality required by the consumer.

A repository integrates all the service related information like design information, runtime topologies, service monitoring and management solutions, code etc.It is like a centralized place where all the stakeholders can access information.

The difference between Registry and Repository can be defined by the features at runtime and design time.

Registry:

At designtime the metadata  describes mostly the services and how they can be discovered. While at run time  Meta data usually focused on the delivering contract and policy information about the services.

Repository:

The data at design time mostly describes artifacts such as code. Runtime repositories normally store messages and provide query service for the services and audit service for monitoring services and variety of other capabilities.
